The Foodie File: Jam Judging at the The Royal Agricultural Fair

Royal Winter Fair jam entries The Royal Canadian Agricultural Fair began this weekend in Toronto. The cooks of the Test Kitchen and I were invited to judge the jams, jellies and pickles. It was a great way to see what home cooks are up to and interested in. The organizer told us that the first year she was involved, eleven years ago, she tasted forty-five different strawberry jams – this year there were seven.

It was very interesting to see food trends having infiltrated into home cooking like the inclusion of Gogiberry Jam and Acai. Also the salsa category has become one of the biggest in recent years.

Head out to the Royal and get inspiration for next canning season; maybe I will be tasting your bread and butter pickles next year!
