The Foodie File: What is your Favourite Roast?
I was on a date, that moment in a new relationship when you are still asking the getting to know you questions – “what kind of movies do you like?†“what are your hobbies?†“where do you like to go eat?†etc. So my date turns to me and asks “what kind of roast do you like?â€
Did I hear that right? Is he asking me my favourite roast joint? Have I been transported back in time to a Dickinsonian moment? Are we going to have to eat mutton? To be honest, hearing such a thing did give me a little thrill. I had a long-term relationship with a vegetarian that left this butcher’s daughter a little flat, so to hear “what is your favourite roast†– as odd as it was – I have to admit was a bit of a turn on.
I bring up this strange food encounter because as November days and cold weather are upon us, I want to pack in the BBQ and tie up a big hunk of meat; pork loins, leg of lamb, prime rib, braised pot roast – it’s all sounding good to me.
A couple of nights after my date I was strangely compelled to roasted myself a whole chicken stuffed with lemons, garlic and fresh thyme. In case you are wondering, a whole roast chicken is my favourite roast… what’s yours?

Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding!
Yummy – that might have to be tonight’s dinner!
I recently made a spice-crusted eye of the round that was fabulous – and huge! Everyone loved it.
