The Foodie File: American Thanksgiving

I have a sister that lives in Connecticut so this past weekend I spent my time having a second Thanksgiving with our American friends. As much as I love a Canadian Thanksgiving, I have to say the Americans truly make their holiday spectacular from the Macy’s Day parade, to the all-day football games to the 30 people gatherings and the over the top thanksgiving spreads. The one I went to featured two turkeys (one brined and roasted and the other barbequed) bourbon spiked sweet potato mash with pecans, peas with bacon and shallots, creamed pearl onions, mashed potatoes, french green beans, green bean casserole with mushrooms, two types of stuffing one made from pumpkin bread and the other traditional, salad, fresh baked rolls, cranberry sauce, gravy and a selection of pies and cakes. I am sure I am forgetting something but I just can’t remember it all.

What an extravaganza! The only thing missing oddly enough was pumpkin pie. So the next day I had a great time with my nephew Sam whipping up a couple of my special secret ingredient pumpkin pies that we all thought we needed to cap off the Thanksgiving feast.

Thanks to Ken and Elizabeth for letting me crash their party!

Christine, we’re glad you were able to join us. You did forget something, the scotch room lead by 2 guitar-strumming Canadians.
