The Foodie-file: TWO FREE TICKETS for foodie-file readers!
I bear good tidings for foodies on a mediocre Monday. The Women and Wine event at The Fifth Social Club in Toronto Ontario is a fundraising event benefiting Toronto Western Hospital for lupus research and is taking place on February 20th. It is a swanky night of great wine, great food and food and wine celebrities to schmooze with. The event sponsor, Lifford wine agency has graciously donated two free tickets valued at $190.00 to be won by a lucky reader of The Foodie-file.
I love the theme Women and Wine because we all know that women love their wine – the drink of choice of the fairer gender. However I also know that many readers of the Foodie-file are busy mom’s and career women that need to get on with their day.
So in honour of the power of women to forge ahead in the face of pain and fatigue (and as a service to food and drink lovers everywhere) I propose the following contest. To take a crack at the tickets I need you to post in the comments on this blog entry your best cure or prevention (outside of don’t drink alcohol) for a hangover. I will be choosing the winner one week from today so get creative, write it down and lets hear how you get through the foggy blur of one too many glasses of wine. My wed editor, Colleen Tully and I will be choosing the winner (and testing out the cures if necessary). Good luck and let the drinking and recovering begin!

Hi Christine. When I’ve imbibed to excess I take a triple-dose of vitamins with an Advil, then find my way to a plate of fried potatoes with extra sea salt. I then spend a non-productive day sipping club soda with lemon, reading trashy magazines or gossip blogs and I end up feeling much better!
1 litre of water, 1 litre of chocolate milk, 1 litre of water, 1 litre of chocolate milk. Then bed.
I usually know when an evening will be accompanied by good friends and a few good bottles of wine. So in preparation for the event I always have a big jug of water available at the bar, followed by lots of fantastic appetizers. Once the evening is done and I look at all the empty bottles I reach for 2 magnesium citrate pills and a big glass of water. In the morning it’s definately coffee and if I can have some chocolate nearby…they say that good dark chocolate can cure all ailments…hangovers are included in that aren’t they? Oh and of course if time and schedule allow a few good hours in PJ’s.
Before crawling/falling into bed: two aspirin of your choice chased with a tall glass of not too cold water. (note: one aspirin is not enough and you should never take more than two with alcohol in your system).
In the morning: Under no circumstances should you get out of bed before 11am. Noon is better, but 11am is the absolute earliest. Sleep is the very best hangover cure. If you lie there at 9am, forcing your eyes shut, feeling that headache creeping in, do not get out of bed. You will doze back to sleep.
Upon undertaking the vertical position: A good stiff orange juice is best. Not too big, not too small. And as much as I live for coffee, there has been the odd morning when a coffee just wasn’t my friend. So play that one by ear. Sit. Preferrably with a view to outside. Do not turn on the TV. DO not force yourself to read or phone anyone. Just relax.
Getting ready: Jeans that have already been worn once during the week are mandatory. On the top half (and this is important) you must find the shirt in your closet that has the ideal balance between “I don’t care if it’s old and worn, I’m comfy” and “yeah, I’m kinda sexy when I’m hungover, aren’t I?” sort of look.
The final touch: Pull on the groovy boots, and go out for Eggs Benedict with someone who is in the same headspace as you. Or whomever you want. Or alone.
If you are still a wee bit unsure if you have really mastered/avoided the hangover…. buy a new pair of gloves, or socks. There. Done.
Whenever I get together with my two sisters I know wine will be on the menu. We always have great food and great conversation…and great wine. I get hangovers quite easily since my son was born (20 months ago) so I need to have a fail-proof cure.
Before I leave the house I make sure I hydrate (at least a litre of water that day or more) and then continue to drink water throughout the evening along with the wine. Make sure to eat (although that is rarely a problem with my sisters and I cooking!) and pace myself.
When I stumble in the door I head directly for the kitchen. Waiting for me on the counter (my dear husband knows to put it out for me if he goes to bed before I get home) are 2 TUMS, 1000 mg of Vitamin C and a litre-sized bottle of water. Note: there are no pain killers. They are unnecessary in this situation, and can be dangerous to combine with alcohol. The Tums bumps up your calcium and lowers your phosphorus which helps your body balance out it’s electrolytes…the cause of most hangover symptoms. If you want to eat a salty snack too that helps as well.
I pop the pills and tote the bottle to bed with me. I drink that water throughout the night and wake up feeling, if not perfect, well enough to get up at 7am with the aforementioned 20-month old son…who is the remainder of a good cure for a hangover; his smiles and hugs and kisses work wonders!
I’m pretty boring, and it doesn’t take much to get me tipsy, so I usually try to avoid the hangover problem in the first place with lots of water along with my wine or beer. Ibuprofen and more water, followed by coffee or diet soda, helps in the morning. Carbonated flavored water (with a bit of sodium, if you check the label) helps with rehydration more than plain water.
Stephanie Plum, a character in a series of mystery novels by Janet Evanovich, recommends “The Cure”: a large fries and Coke from McDonalds. If I were ever to forget my usual preventative routine and end up hung over (say, if I won tickets to the Women and Wine event and was so excited that I forgot to stay hydrated) I’d definitely try The Cure.
Advance preparation is definately required for the cause and cure of a proper hangover.
First off, to get a proper hangover I suggest purchasing a good quantity of Lifford wines. If you have never looked at their selection, you are missing out on some of the best imported wines available in Ontario. Heintz and Cakebreak from California and Louis Jadot from France just to name a few.
Then a trip to Pusateri’s is necessary. Pick up their fresh squeezed blood orange juice. Finally a trip to the LCBO for a bottle of sparkling wine, or champagne if you really want to celebrate your well earned hangover.
Make sure both are put top shelf center in your fridge the night before. Perhaps the champagne glass on the counter would be a good idea also.
When you finally make it to the kitchen the next day, open the sparkling wine and oj. Start with a 50/50 mixture of sparkling wine and oj. As the day progresses you should be able to wean yourself off the oj. By the time you are drinking only sparkling wine you will be cured.
Lots of water & fast food!!!! The water will help flush out the alcohol and the grease from the grub seems to help absorb the booze. You’ll be back to normal again soon!
The best cure that I know for a hangover is Midol and a Gatorade. The word on the street is that the pain killer in the Midol helps the headache and there is something else in it that helps straighten out your hydration issues. All I know is… it works!
The best cure is to not suffer one in the a.m in the 1st place, Drink lots and lots of water but if that doesn’t work here are some remedies that have worked for me.1)eat as much freasy type food as you can( or better still, send someone out to buy you a cheesburger and fries) I know, lots of fat and calories but this isn;t an everyday occurance and the point is to get rid of that nasty hangover, right?2) Drink pickle juice( as much as you can handle) Believe me, it works.
I drink lots of water before going to bed and I take an Advil before going to bed anticipating what I may feel like in the morning. I wake up to More advil and then I force myself to go for a walk and then come back home and possibly a nap in the afternoon. Its all worth it for some great red wine.
Take a large glass, squeeze some limes in it (fill about 25% of the glass), add about two spoonfuls of salt, and then fill the rest of the glass with bubbly water (schweppes or any of that sort of flavorless water with bubbles). This will be easy to drink, rehidrate her pretty fast, take the headache away and get her ready for the greasy food (which I would recommend, too). Taco’s are best!
I love my red wine, but now and then, it hangs me over….not sure why. I usually try to avoid red wine when the weather has a very low pressure system. Then, I drink white. But sometimes you just have to have the red. The next morning if that dreaded feeling of being scared to lift your head off the pillow happens, I get myself up very slowly. Then I go downstairs and pour myself a shot of whiskey. Yes I said whiskey. It always does the trick!
Savour EVERY drop of wine that passes your lips
. Drink water between each glass of wine. Sample the food. If possible, meet and chat with everyone at the event; laugh often; dance between sips, bites and chats. When all is done, drink water until you can’t drink anymore, at minimum 1 litre. Plan for a good night of sleep (with water on the nighttable) and as soon as you wake up, drink water until you can’t drink anymore. Plan a healthy breakfast. IMPORTANT: call your BFF to compare notes on the night!
Advil and a huge glass of water as soon as you get home. Then, a nice, long back massage from husband while you fall asleep – this assists in preparing your body for the impending hangover. Upon waking (after sleeping at least 10 hours) head to the local Chinese restuarant and order plenty of fried stuff. Return home for another back massage and nap. Guaranteed to work.
baby aspirin and a big carton of chocolate milk before bed and again at the crack of dawn when my 3 kids under 5 show no mercy – who has time to be hung over????
If you know you’re going to have a few (maybe a few too many) drinks that evening you can easily eat one piece of whole wheat bread smeared in peanut butter before you head out the door. Not only do you get an extra serving of protien and fibre, the two together is supposed to help absorb some of the alcohol as you will consume.
Chug down a BIG glass of water before you hit the sheets. It’s worked for me.
With a little extra time to sleep in, you shouldn’t be suffering as much as you could be!
I love my wine (red and white), but these days even two glasses can be enough for a ‘rough morning’. However, not to be deterred, I do start the evening with lots of water (despite the obvious outcome of having to visit the loo every twenty minutes!)Eating is a must, as well as, drinking an equal amount of water to wine.
Once home, two tylenol, juice by the bed (water tastes terrible with hangover mouth!) Whenever you wake up in the morning, move slowly, drink something carbonated before drinking coffee – slip into some comfy track pants, sweatshirt, go out for poutine! It always works!
elaine
Well I have definately tried everything from Mountain Dew to greasy bacon and eggs. After a red wine night I suggest hydration – lots of water, combined with Motrin or a pain killer that you are not used to taking (for the headache). For the nausea an ounce of rye laced with black pepper – chuck it back and feel the burn in your tummy – it’s all good. If none of these work I suggest the last resort – sleep it off!! Back to bed. There is nothing like 24 hours for a cure.
As women and wine are a perfect fit, so is the of bread and cheese. What else do you include in every picnic basket. Which brings me to the perfect hangover sandwich…what else but grilled cheese! Nothing brings you around faster or is tolerated better.
Various cheese actually accentuate certain wines. And bread well my thighs tell the tale of that true love.
A night of charity, love, and people, I cant imagine anything else I would rather do. Believe me as a red cross worker I put in long days with few off. Therefore Im very particular to how I spend off hours….Love to come.
Can I come?
Jenny xoxo
Super Bowl weekend I had overnight guests from out of the country, they came armed with their back home hang over recipe. A can of sardines! Yup I myself didn’t try it I don’t get hangovers but they swear by it. Followed by coffee and a big breakfast “you don’t cook yourself” and a comedy video and a can of beer. It seemed to work for them. Then you snooze till dinner is almost cooked one “you don’t cook yourself”! Lasagna, salad and garlic bread. They didn’t have hangovers and went home spoiled, full and packing lunches for work the next day. So sardines-coffee-breakfast-laughter & more alcohol-a nap and a cheesy salty fiberous meal, that’s it in a nutshell. The key is not to do any of the cooking yourself!
The cure is 1 glass of wine and then at least 250ml of water then the next glass of wine. My sister-in-law shared this thought with me and it seems to work! It even helps prevent the hangover but just in case two Advil before turning in and then a can of coke first thing in the morning seems to work for me.
another drink could always work! LOL
Be prepared in anticipation of a hangover – arrange to have the children (if any) out of the house early and not return before noon. Sleep it off. When you do get up – put on comfort clothes and in moderation – have your favorite drink whether it be coffee/o.j./water or more alcohol. Move slowly, put on your favorite music and it will come together for you.
My best cure for a hangover is sleep.BUT, before you can sleep you must stop the room from
spinning. It only spins when you close your eyes, or when your at a large banquet hall looking for the bathroom. So the best cure is
1: salted crackers.
2: sparkling water with Gatorade.
3: small sips of plain cool water.
4: then lots of sleep. That’s the best part.
But always remember you only get a hangover if you mix drinks. Dont EVER mix; not even a sip.
PRIOR to attending an occasion, where you KNOW you will be enticed by an exuberant selection of “VINO”, take the time for a relaxing dinner (and I mean a REAL dinner, not standing in the kitchen nibbling on chips, cookies and crackers!). Also, drink two glasses of – 1 part water – 1 part gatorade, at least one hour before the festivities begin.
AFTERWARD, drink some water before bed, sleep as long as possible, have a tall glass of water when you wake,BEFORE your first cup of coffee.(this allows the coffee to “perk” you up quicker)
Get ready for the day, as if everything is fine,(more coffee will help!) and sure enough it will be in no time!
