The Foodie-file: Last Meal on Earth

My Last SupperHave you seen this book? It has been circulating around the office and I have been waiting for it to land on my desk. The photography is gorgeous and mesmerizing (with the exception of the disturbing photo of Anthony Bourdin… talk about your naked chef!) and each photo illustrates the essence of the chef and his or her’s “last supper”. I especially liked Canadian son Martin Piccard’s euphemistic description of his last meal on earth where he “would be full of the adrenaline of his last happiness.” Although some hyper chef-y types went for the haute cuisine, for the most part - with no limitations but the imagination and a repertoire of dishes from the finest creative chef minds – homey foods seem to win out. Childhood flavours and simple quality ingredients with family by ones side are themes brought forward over and over by each chef.

My last supper would have to include my fathers sweet and salty homemade prosciutto, vine ripened tomatoes at the height of the summer season and chewy white bread with a good thick crust.

The book begs the question, tomorrow you die – what would be on your menu tonight?

I know that mine would have to include homemade pasta, lots of red wine and some stinky cheeses. I’m still mulling over the other courses! Hopefully I will have lots of time to consider this question….

so much food so little time…let’s see, I would start with some shellfish, probably mussels in a provencale style. Some homemade pasta with my wife’s tomato sauce. A butterflyed leg of lamb grilled to perfection. A salad from my garden. Some cured cheese and lots of red wine.

Hmm, Italian food is winning out in the Foodie-file. Of course it’s the Italian’s that have actually mulled over this question!

    Is no one else representing?
