Win 2 tickets to Toronto Taste worth $450!

toronto taste blogHi foodies! It’s Canadian Living’s web food editor Colleen filling in for Christine as she gallivants across the country, frolicking in merriment as she discovers food and drink to share with us all. Oh to be a food writer!

But enough of my whining. I’m here to tell you that 50 of Toronto’s top chefs are gathering together on Sunday, June 8th to show off their culinary prowess at the Toronto Taste event in support of Second Harvest, a non-profit organization collecting and delivering unused fresh food from the Toronto’s restaurants and small grocery stores to shelters across the city. Wineries, micro-breweries and cocktail vendors also represent a large portion of the event’s purveyors. Yay!

Why is this important? YOU could win two tickets – valued at $225 each!!

Get your salivatory (and creative) juices flowing and tell us your favourite Toronto Taste. Is it pork dumplings in Chinatown? Vegan fare in the Annex? Flaming cheese on the Danforth? One lucky person who comments below will be chosen at random to attend next Sunday’s Toronto Taste event! The winner will be contacted on Thursday, June 5th and tickets will be held at the event in the winner’s name.

So pony up, dear readers, and tell us your favourite bites from the City of Toronto. You and a friend could be attending this year’s most exclusive foodie event in Toronto! Good luck!

My favourite Toronto Taste is tak kalbi at Joon’s restaurant in North York. It’s a mess of Korean chile-paste-marinated chicken, stir-fried on a griddle at your table with slices of napa cabbage, sweet potato and logs of chewy rice cakes. For an extra dollar they’ll add a mound of cheese.

I love Natchos Thai Thai at King and Church. It is the oddest combo – Thai and Mexican food (!), but somehow, it really works. So many of the main dishes can be made with a vegetarian version. These people really know how to make tofu taste fantastic! Excellent value for money.

I have many favourites in the city which all depend on what what I’m hankering for. My go-to favourite when I can’t decide is The New York Cafe at the corner of Broadview and Danforth. Great food, reasonable prices and great service. Katarina is reason enough alone to pay them a visit!

Food options in Toronto are as diverse as its population. I have a favorite food for each meal of the day and each season of the year. But what comes to mind at this hour are the chocolate almond croissants at Celestin Bakery on Mt. Pleasant. Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside – arrive early on the weekend and you’ll be treated to the sensational taste of warm, rich chocolate flowing from the inside of one of these freshly baked treats. By far the best in all Toronto.

When I was visiting Toronto in the summer my niece and future nephew brought over some wonderful Indian food. They said it was from a small little restaurant that they particularily liked. There was the most delicious and yummy better chicken…mmmmm. Unfortunately at this moment I do not know the name of that restaurant but would gladly find out and supply it should I win.

I know that Toronto has a plethora of amazing taste sensations, however, rarely get to experience them as I live about 2 hours away. Although I haven’t dined enough in Toronto to have a favourite restaurant, I’m sure the Toronto Taste Event would be the perfect place to get started on my culinary journey. Bon appetit!

I don’t live in Toronto anymore but I can’t wait to get back to visit a particular sushi restaurant on the Danforth. I can’t remember the name but it has the best Japanese food and the prices are so reasonable. A huge serving of vegetarian sushi, green tea, salmon teryiaki, vegetable tempura, green tea ice cream — it’s heavenly.

For years whenever I visited my sister it was tradition to go for wings at the Bistro on Avenue Road. My sister passed away a few years ago and whenever I am back in Toronto I always make a point of going to the Bistro to celebrate her memory and enjoy the fabulous wings. Totally worth the air fare!
