Centennial Tea at the Empress Hotel
Continuing with my tour of Canada’s west coast I lately made my way out for a second time. This time I was bound for Victoria and Tofino for four days on a whirlwind tour. One of the reasons I was there was to experience the High Tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria.
The tea is an institution and a well touristed stop. This year the hotel is celebrating it’s 100th anniversary with a $100 Cenntennial tea. When they were putting together the special menu, someone stumbled upon the original menu which featured Mumm’s champagne. Mumm’s was contacted and now they are sponsoring the tea in honour of their original association. This little tidbit of information speaks to the historical nature of the hotel and the high tea experience. The colonial hotel, the link to the past, and knowing that you are drinking the Queen’s favourite tea and being privy to knowing how she takes it (milk, two sugars) – this is what is special about the tea event…oh, and also the free flowing Mumm’s champagne!
