Villa Sandi Wine Cellars

barrelsAnother tidbit about the wine cellars at Villa Sandi. The Villa itself is a Palladian villa dating back to 1622. It is located in the middle of wine country in the heart of the Province of Treviso. Wine production has been going on here since before the Villa was built. The cellars, running underground below the villa, date back to the 18th century and run one and a half kilometres under the villa. The cellars naturally maintain the temperature and humidity to house and age wine. There is a door in the basement of the villa that takes you into the cellar tunnels and leads you to a passage outside of the house.

During World War 1, soldiers made use of these tunnels to hide out in and as escape routes. In some places they are very narrow and cramped they certainly would not have had the electric lights of their present day incarnation and probably had quite a few residents of the hairy vermin persuasion. It was chilling imagining people living down there.

These are all rows of wine aging, each shelf holds a double row of wine.

Every inch of space is used. In the first picture, where the tunnel was too narrow, the bottles are stacked sideways. sideways.jpgver-cellar.jpg
It was neat to see where the lots of wine had been designated for famous places around the world.
