The Outdoor Oven: Phase 2

The oven form

My friends sent me some pictures of phase two of the outdoor oven project. A lot of progress has been made and it looks like we’re off to a smashing start! The base of the oven is made of cinder blocks and they’re basically stacked high enough for easy cooking, we left a space on the left to store kindling. They placed two concrete patio stones over the base for a flat surface. On the right there are firebricks which form a wall, this was filled with empty beer bottles and sawdust which are used as insulation for the oven floor. The left side is a work surface and it has been tiled for aesthetic purposes. Over the insulation layer is a layer of firebricks laid flat that will be the hearth. They extend out a bit so that you can slide food in and out of the oven easily. And finally there is a mound of sand that will be the mould to build the mud around; it will be removed once the oven is dry. It is covered in plastic just to protect it from the weather until we are ready for phase three!
