Aspey Bay Oysters
Another find from our roving food editor Gabi Bright. She came back from Cape Breton raving about the oysters. Born in Cape Breton, Alex Dunphy has lived on South Harbour his entire life. He and his wife Susan hold a processor and exporter license and ensure the oysters go directly to market while fresh and in excellent condition. Alex and Susan select, gather and grade the oysters by hand.
Restaurants in Toronto serve Aspy Bay Oysters, but when you are in the area the Hideaway Campground and Oyster Market is the place to have them. “The bar is basically three seats and they are signing people into the campground and shucking oysters,” Gabi says. But that they are impeccably fresh and perfectly shucked with expertise. She also says that “they also make excellent lobster rolls, we had them on our way to and coming back from coming from the beach.”
