Pennfield Blueberries in New Brunswick

foodie findsAs I made my way east from St Andrews by the Sea to St John New Brunswick, the road sides were brimming with high bush blueberry. I stopped at the St John farmers market and bought a quart. They were car snacks and breakfast for the next three days.

I also had them at the Opera Bistro in a blueberry streusel tart, in a luscious homemade ice cream at the Rossmount Inn and with my morning continental breaky at the Fairmont Algonquin. It was a veritable blueberry extravaganza.

They are smaller than a regular cultivated blueberry and pack a huge flavour punch! They are like the wild Ontario blueberries I’m used to, but I have to say they are maybe more flavourful and about half the price, probably because of how abundant they are.

When you’re driving east along Highway 1 keep a look out for little stands that sell fresh picked blueberries around Pennfield, about half way between St Andrews and St Johns.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that can compare to the flavor of fresh picked blueberries! I only wish that we could pick them here in the Okanagan.

    Hi there,

I am currently a cook in St. Andrews…and as we are still in the thick of blueberry season here, they find their way into salads, vinaigrettes, sorbets and compotes, coulis, to name a few.

Did you get a chance to eat at Kingsbrae Arms?

I also just ate at Opera this past weekend – some of the best food in St. John for sure.

    Thanks for reading.

    Jody,
No I didb’t get a chanceto eat at Kingsbrae Arms, that’s not the restaurant in the gardens is it? We were going to have lunch there one day but we didn’t have enough time so opted for a roadside lobster roll instead. Did I miss out? Is that where you work?
