Free Tickets to Whiskey Live!
I am pre-empting Foodie-finds Fridays because I just received two free tickets to the 3rd annual Whiskey Live show at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. It takes place next Friday Oct 24th, from 7-10 pm, and I want you all to have the opportunity to take a crack at getting these babies in your hot hands so you can enjoy some excellent imbibing.
The Prize: You will be vying for 2 tickets valued at $190.00, which gets you VIP early entry into the show, a Whiskey Live tasting glass, show guide, 6 vouchers and all of the complementary food you can eat! Admittance is limited to those aged 19 years or older, and this includes children in pushchairs and babes in arms. Unless you want to fly from wherever you live, this event is held in Toronto so you unfortunately have to be willing to come to Toronto to get the tickets.
How To Win: Everyone seemed to love the hangover cure contest for the Women and Wine event, so following in those footsteps why don’t you leave a comment on this post with your best whiskey cocktail recipe. I will pick my favourites and try them out (with some help from the test kitchen – my liver is aching just thinking about it!) and the creator of my favourite cocktail will win the tickets. I will announce the winner on Thursday’s blog post.
Inside tip: Since I am sole judge and jury on this, I’ll let you know that I’m not big on overly sweet cocktails.
OK, start your muddling and good luck to all!

I warm devil’s food cake with real slabs of butter…A very cold can of Coke and a bowel a Cambell’s chicken noodle soup…MUST BE CANNED!! Pepper and 6 crackers in the soup….serve it HOT and eat it slowly after consuming the cake and coke….then watch an old rerun sitcom or 1940′s tear jerker…stay on the couch the entire time..place a cold hot water bottle on your stomch and a warm towel on your head. …after this 2 regular strngth Tylenol and water….wait 1 hour and drink a coffee …no TEA…if you hate coffee…warm water with lemon….You should be cured after a hot shower…rinsed with lukewarm water. If none of this helps…clean up your mess you just made doing all this.
Hi!
I love your blog! I do like whisky..but only in fall and winter..go figure.
My cocktail is pretty simple
1 shot of whisky (I perfer Wisers)
one cup of boiling hot water
1 bag of Calm tea from Tazo
1 teaspoon honey
let tea steep for 2 mins in hot water in mug. Remove tea bag, add honey and stir till disolved…then add whisky.
Enjoy by a warm fire with a warm body near by!
This is my favorite thing to drink when I have a cold or it is cold.
Enoy!
Shelley, sorry if my directions were confusing. I need a cocktail to get a hangover, not a cure for afterwards. Although I do like your hangover cure but that contest is over!
Kathy, I love sleepy time tea and whiskey with honey and always drink it when I have a cold, I’m convinced it is a curative!
My belief has always been that Scotch (whisky) makes water taste better. HA! I drink my ‘whisky’ neat but always with a tiny bit of water which brings out the flavour (and with a malt whisky NO ice). However, here’s winter favourite
2 oz of Scotch (ach! go on not 1.5)
1 oz of warmed Stone’s Ginger Wine
Big Squeeze of lemon
If using for medicinal purposes I add a bit of hot water
Put in a large mug or glass and hope winter goes away.
Hi Christine,
My favourite whisky recipe involves too much beer one night with a good friend. Add a couple of cute men, failing memories about which bar they were going to next, and a steady downpour of rain. Stir in one umbrella between the two of us, about 5 km of walking around the middle of nowhere, and a very heavy computer bag we share holding. Top off with two rounds of Jameson’s doubles at the first bar we could find and uproarious laughter at our silliness. Now that’s a fine recipe!
Butterlover,
Hmmmm…. I’ve had that recipe myself, as I recall it’s dangerous if sitting on a bar stool. I’m not sure I’ll be able to recreate it in the test kitchen!
Yes – I do remember the spicy taste of what Butterlover describes but am much more sensible now. Try this:
2 or 3 oz (why not?) Whisky over rocks
Healthy Squeeze of Lemon
Top with Soda Water to your taste
Serve in a chunky crystal lowball for maximum visual appeal.
Mmmm… – is it too early for a cocktail?
Okay I love this one and it is not too sweet. infuse fresh basil leaves with water and a teaspoon of suger (or as much sugar as you prefer to taste) stovetop – try not to boil it. Let cool. Add one shoot whiskey of your choice to 3 parts tastey basil infusion over ice with a twist of lemon and enjoy.
How about hot apple cider 1-2 shots of good whiskey and a slice of lemon and a stick of cinnamon–yummy.
I mix a bit of whiskey (1 part whiskey to 2-3 parts juice) with grapefruit juice it sounds harsh but it’s actually really good, adding a maraschino cherry makes it even better.
I’ve also been known to mix Jack Daniels with apple juice.
The Falling Star – In a shaker filled with ice, add 1 oz whiskey, 1/2 oz sloe gin,a dash of bitters and the juice of 1/2 lemon. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon twist.
1 750 ml bottle Grants Scotch
5 lbs ram goat meat (wash with vinegar)
2 scotch bonnets minced
1 bunch green onions finely chopped
4 heads of garlic minced
6 large onions finely chopped
salt to taste
6 tbs curry powder
4 tbs canola oil for marinade
3 oz canola oil for cooking
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl reserving 1\2 of the whiskey or about 12 oz.
Let marinade for 4 hours or overnight
drink 2 oz of the scotch
heat another 3 oz of oil in a pot and add goat meat with seasoning
turn frequently to brown
add curry powder and continue turning
drink 2 oz of scotch
add boiling water to cover (recipe found elsewhere)
drink 2 oz of scotch
cook until meat is soft to your liking.
I have no teeth so it must be real soft
Drink 2 more oz of scotch
Out of scotch? Silly get more!!
My Husband & I travel to New Orleans every year & I’ve grown to love good, old fashioned Sazerac Cocktails! The ones I make at home never seem to be as good as the ones I drink in New Orleans, it could be I’m missing the cool jazz vibe!
I mix 3oz of rye, 1oz of simple syrup a splash of bitters & a drop or two of absinthe. I usually just add a bit of lemon zest but I’ve had them with a fancy lemon twist a cherry & either one is a nice addition!
Let me know if you’d like my recipe for a Cajun Bloody Mary! It seems strange that a city like New Orleans that is so big on seafood doesn’t know what Clamato is but they’ve certainly made up for it!
Cheers!
Well it’s simple…….i love a good whiskey now and again…
I call it Rye and 7 with a twist of lime…..
The lime gives it the all time twist and I like diet pop to bring down the sweetness as the whiskey is sweet enough…..try it and enjoy!
If you ever have time on your hands and would like to stetch it with friends I suggest a Rusty Nail…..
My recipe is for half Scotch & half Drambuie on ice…..Stirring occasionaly…..You can adjust to the sweetness you prefer by the amount of Drambuie……The longer you let it stand the colder it gets and the tastier it becomes…..
I agree with Jhenipher
I like 7 & 7 on the rocks with a dash of lime .
thats segrams 7 rye whiskey .
cheers Geoff
Hi Christine,
Here’s my recipe for the best whiskey sour, which is very popular around our house:
1 oz makers mark
2 -3 oz homemade lemonade (see recipe below)
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
Homemade Lemonade:
1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (5-6 lemons)
1/2 – 3/4 cup sugar
1 cup crushed ice
4 cups water
Place all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth
Enjoy!
My favorite is the plain old Whiskey Sour.
In a shaker filled with ice, mix the juice of one lemon, one lime, one orange and 1.5 oz whiskey. Add as much powdered sugar as you like to taste. Shake and pour into a ice filled tumbler. If you find it a little strong, you can always add a little water to dilute it a bit.
In honour of the Cranberry Festival, I call this the Bala Autumn Wakeup. Add 4 oz of Cranberry juice to 1 1/2 oz whiskey. Add ice and top with a drizzle of Sortilege (Maple syrup/Canadian Whiskey liqueur–only available in Quebec). Garnish with a few frozen cranberries. If you don’t have any Sortilege use a drizzle of Frangelico. Enjoy.
Scotch Manhattan
dash or 2 of bitters
2/3 scotch
1/3 sweet vermouth
put ingredients in a mixing glass filled with cracked ice, stirr until well mixed, strain and serve
Boilermaker.Cold mug of beer, shot of whiskey .Drop the shot of with glass into the mug of cold beer and drink, Cheers.

Mulled Cranberry Whisky Tea:
1.- 4 cinnamon sticks,broken
– 2 whole star anise
– 6 whole cloves
– 2 strips orange rind
– 4 cups cranberry cocktail
– 1/2 cup whisky
– 4 cups hot brewed tea
2. Tie cinnamon, star anise, cloves and orange rind in cheesecloth square. In saucepan, heat cranberry cocktail with spice bag over low heat for 15 minutes. Discard spice bag. Stir in whisky and tea. Keep warm.
Makes 8 servings.
I usually make a batch of fish broth or a bowl of Miso soup, it helps rejuvenate the soul… I don’t know if this is what you wanted but it works for me… Or a Sub and Ginger Ale, they mesh very well and keep everything in check.
While my husband has a penchant for single malt, neat, in a crystal whisky tasting glass; where the flared lip sends the amber ambrosia to the sweet tasting area on the tongue…, my favourite whisky cocktail is pretty simple:
tall glass filled with ice
1 to 1 1/2 ounces of whisky
fill with Dr. Pepper ( really !!)
A great flavour that nearly everyone enjoys.
