Fourth Week of Holiday Gifts for Foodie-file Readers

The fourth holiday cookboook goes to Sumiko Oda-Gillard of Toronto, Ontario. Congratulation Sumiko! Hope you enjoy Marth Stewart’s Cooking School.

There are still four more chances to take home a cookbook. Next up is Barefoot Contessa’s Back to Basics. So don’t forget to sign up to have the foodie-file delivered directly to your e-mail inbox to be eligible for a holiday gift from me!

I also have another book give away going on that is more fun because it involves cooking. Make this dish from the West Cookbook and I’ll post the pictures of your dishes and award three cookbooks to the best submissions.

    Hi Christine,
I’m looking at recipe for stunning cocoa snowflake cookies on cover of December issue of Cdn Living magazine. Recipe calls for sprinkling of coarse or sanding sugar. What exactly is sanding sugar and where would I find this? The bulk food store in my area does not carry it.
Reply urgent as I am committed to an 11-dozen cookie exchange. Many thanks.

Marelene, if you have a cake decorating store in your area you will find it there. Because of the time of year you may find it at a regular grocery store as well. If not – try Golda’s Kitchen online, they ship and will have it.

Sanding sugar is a larger crystal sugar than regular which used for decorating. Use regular sugar if you can’t find it – it won’t look as promanent as the cookies in the picture but will still give them a nice glittery effect.

    Happy baking!

You can never get enough of cookbooks with the basics, because even though I’ve been cooking for a long time, I get in a rut, and the only thing that will kick out of my comfort zone, is a book like the Barefoot Contessa’s. She gives you the confidence that anything is possible, and she’s a master at making the simple look like you’ve been cooking all day!

The Barefoot Contessa is a real sized woman who cooks no nonense food with calories!!! In this age of young women chefs on TV with low cut tops that intice, the Contessa is one of the few female chefs with recipes that have flair without fuss. Would love the book!!

  • Please enter my name to win one of the Barefoot Contessa’s Back to Basics cookbook. I love to watch her on the cooking network. Thank-you! Lorna

I love the email I get from you folks and get good news from time to time in the blogs. I thought I might make a suggestion for your giveaways. From time to time friends give me metal boxes or other containers to store the great number of cookies I make at Christmas and for several occasions during the Summer. Not only are these second-hand beauties good to use (keeping stored items fresh), but they also provide a very pretty way to decorate my kitchen. I set them up on the tops of the cupboards (and sometimes even remember to dust them) where I can see them and thus I don’t need to use other precious storage space in my home( a cabin on a country golf course). It’s nic e to have them do double duty as countryfied decor!
