Mexican Candy
I got all caught up in the excitement of my giveaways this month and forgot to post these pics. When my sister got back from Veracruz, Mexico last month, she brought me these delectable sweeties from her husband’s hometown, These are traditional sweets made with cajeta (sweetened caramelized milk) and coconut.
One is like a fudge made of sweetened milk. Another has the cajeta sandwiched between two thin wafers. There is a coconut macaroon kind of thing (like the inside of a Mounds bar). And another coconut bar in red, white and green for the Mexican flag. There is also a peanut “marzipan” that tastes like the filling between peanut butter sandwich cookies! The colourful hand-painted fish plate was also a Mexican souvenir.

These are all traditionally made candies. Try making your own coconut macaroons or quick fudge!

I saw the picture and got all excited thinking the candy was going to be the next giveaway!
Now I want to go to Mexico.
Mmmm… these candies look even better online! I think I still have a few of those peanut marzipan left… Anyway – I am weighing in to let you Foodies know that I’ve seen many of these candies available in Latin grocery stores – even my green grocer has the Obleas (cajeta between host-like wafers) at her check-out counter. If you want to give these a try, go exploring in the shops in Latin neighbourhoods. Most major centres have a Latin shop or two that you can check out. If you are lucky enough to be in or near TO, I recommend Kensington Market or the St. Clair and Dufferin area to go looking for Mexican or South American delicacies. Maybe I’ll even convince Christine to take a tour with me one day and we’ll post the sweet and spicy treats we find. What do you say, Foodie? Adios amigos!
The Mexican candy looks interesting. i have type 2 diabetes so i must stay away from all candy. but i can just look at the pictures.
Hey all – I received this email from FABIOLA GALVEZ in Mexico vouching for the authenticity of my candies!
JUST A FEW LINES TO LET YOU KNOW HOW USEFUL ARE ALL YOUR RECIPES AND HINTS FROM YOUR NEWSLETTERS, I READ YOU FROM CULIACAN, SINALOA, IN MEXICO. AND BELIVEME, MY FAMILY LOVES ALL THE NEW RECIPES I’VE MADE. ON THE OTHER HAND, I READ ABOUT A BLOG FROM MEXICAN CANDIES, THOSE CANDIES ARE THE BEST YOU CAN BUY HERE IN MEXICO, BUT SOME OF THEM ARE SO EASY TO MAKE THAT YOU CANN’T BELIVE IT. FOR EXAMPLE MAZAPAN (THIS ISN`T MEXICAN, I THINK IS FROM ASIA)ARE ONLY LIKE A PRESSED FLOUR MADE UP FROM PEANUTS AND SUGAR, LIKE DRY PEANUT BUTTER. BUT STILL DELICIUOS. KEEP WORKING¡ I AM SURE YOUR WORK IS REALLY APPRECIATED AOUTSIDE THE CANADIAN BORDERS¡. YOURS FABY.
