Tequila Drink Recipes

Tequila is going to be my new summer beverage. While in Mexico I learned about and indulged in many new ways of enjoying this libation outside of the popper with lime and salt. I thought I’d share some tequila cocktails with my foodie-friends. Maybe you can have a few for Mothers Day this weekend!

Cazuela (Tequila Soup)
cazuelaMy favourite drink was this specialty of the artisan community of Tlaquepaque at El Abajeno restaurant. It was actually described to me as a soup, but with the healthy dose of tequila I would have to classify the “cazuela” as a cocktail. The drink is named after the terra cotta vessel or “casserole” that it’s served in.

Soda and fresh juices are stirred together in a large casserole with ice and about 3 oz of silver tequila. Everyone around the table is given a straw and the bowl is shared. I don’t think that North American sensibilities will go for bowl sharing so I used the terra cotta bowls my sister brought back for me from Mexico last year as my serving container.

In a “casserole” for one, or low ball glass, combine juice from:
1 orange
1/2 grapefruit
1/2 lime
stir in:
1/2 cup soda water (or Squirt Soda or any Lemon Lime Soda)
1/2 scoop ice
add:
1 oz tequila
Serve with a straw

margaritaSpicy Margarita
Try this new twist on a margarita. Instead of lining the rim with salt, try using chili powder mixed with a bit of salt. In Mexico they used the chili spice blend called Tahin. If you want a great tasting Margarita, make sure you always use fresh lime juice. This is the recipe for Canadian Living’s Classic Margarita. It makes a pitcher full, which you will definitely need if you are making margaritas!

martiniThe Milagro Martini
I loved this refreshing way to drink tequila that the guys from Milagro turned me on to. To a low ball glass add a scoop of ice, bruise a couple of mint leaves and add to the glass. Top with 1 ½ oz of sliver tequila, stir and serve.

Milagro Pomegranate Margarita
This one is a recipe from Milagro that’s yummy and looks really pretty.
1 oz Milagro Reposado Tequila
½ oz Triple sec 1 oz
Fresh Lime Juice
1 oz Simple syrup

1 splash of pomegranate juice

Shake with ice, serve in salt rim glass

One tip for mixed drinks both for those who like to practice mixology and those who are watching sugar in their diets is to use Agave nectar in place of simple syrup. Agave nectar – made from the same plants that Tequila is made from – tastes sweeter than sugar but has a lower glycemic index!

    My favourite Margarita recipe is…
fresh juice from one Meyer’s lemon
fresh juice from 2-3 (depending on size)limes
    3/4 oz triple sec
    1 oz tequila
    ~1tsp Agave nectar
Add all into a shaker half filled with ice, shake, strain into a margarita glass (or even into martini glasses)
Garnish with speared cantaloupe as a counterpoint to the tartness.

    Salud!

And where would one purchase Agave nectar?

I’m a happy girl! I’m a happy girl! LOL! I love tequila – especially a nice sippling tequila. We have friends who live in Mexico and they introduced me to Sangrita!! This is her recipe, and it is so yummy and healthy too! Who knew you could have your tequila and veggies too!

    1-1/2 cup fresh orange juice
    1-1/2 cups tomato juice
3/4 cup V8 vegetable juice or Clamato juice
    1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon onion juice (see below or fine powder
    2 teaspoons Maggi Seasoning
1 to 2 tablespoon hot salsa
1 tablespoon tabasco or hot sauce of your choice

This makes approximately one liter of sangrita.

For the onion juice, grate a small white onion and squeeze the juice, or you could use a lime squeezer or large garlic press.

Sangrita should have a kick – but you be the judge. Mix everything together and chill.

Serve in a small glass with your favorite tequila; or you could mix it all together like a traditional Blood Mary.

You can rim the glasses or just add a bit of salt, pepper and celery salt for extra taste.

Agave nectar is becoming increasingly available. Your best bets are stores like Whole Foods and some of the better health food stores. I’ve also ordered Agave nectar via the internet from a Canadian company – the name of which escapes me.
